First Chapter

When people hear the name Forrest Li, they often think first about technology, entrepreneurship and the enormous company he built in Singapore. But looking only at business and wealth leaves out an important part of his story.

Forrest Li is a man whose life has moved across several worlds: from Tianjin in China to Singapore, from engineering to technology entrepreneurship, from online games and e-commerce to football, education and public service. Today, he is not only the founder and chief executive of Sea Limited, but also President of the Football Association of Singapore, a trustee of the National University of Singapore and an adviser connected with Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. His story is therefore not simply about becoming successful. It is also about what a person does after success — and how professional experience can be used to build institutions, develop young people and contribute to a wider community.

From Tianjin to Singapore

Forrest Li was born in Tianjin, China. He studied engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University before continuing his education at Stanford University, where he earned an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Those two areas of education — engineering and business — would later become important parts of his career. Engineering gave him a technical way of thinking, while business education exposed him to entrepreneurship, management and the international economy.

His move to Singapore became one of the most important turning points in his life.

Rather than building his career only in the country where he was born, Li chose Singapore as the place where he would eventually build his company and his professional life. Sea Limited was founded in Singapore in 2009, with Li serving as its chairman and chief executive from the beginning.

That decision is important because Singapore later became more than simply the location of his company. It became the country in which many of his professional, sporting and educational interests developed.

Building Sea

Li's best-known professional achievement is Sea Limited.

The company began with a strong connection to digital entertainment and gaming through Garena. Over time, however, the business expanded into other areas, most notably e-commerce through Shopee and digital financial services.

The expansion shows something important about Li's approach to work. He did not remain focused on one technology or one generation of consumers. Instead, Sea developed into a broader digital ecosystem.

Today, Li remains Sea's founder, chairman and chief executive. The company's official leadership profile also notes his involvement with institutions outside the company, including the National University of Singapore and Stanford Graduate School of Business. This wider involvement is useful when considering his career. A modern technology leader does not necessarily spend all of his time thinking about products and profits. Leadership can also mean participating in education, sport, public institutions and the development of younger generations.

His relationship with Singapore

One of the more interesting aspects of Forrest Li's story is his relationship with Singapore.

He arrived there as an immigrant and eventually became one of the country's most prominent business leaders. His career has therefore become connected with the country's development as a technology and business centre.

But his contribution is not limited to the corporate world.

Li serves on the board of trustees of the National University of Singapore and has held other institutional roles. He has also served as an independent non-executive director of Shangri-La Asia and as vice chair of the Stanford Graduate School of Business Advisory Council.

These positions place him in environments concerned with education, institutions and long-term development.

That part of his work is less visible than the success of Sea, but it may be just as important in understanding the person behind the entrepreneur.

Football became another major part of his life

Perhaps the most interesting change in Li's public role has been his involvement in football. He is chairman of the Lion City Sailors, a Singapore football club, and in 2025 he became president of the Football Association of Singapore. Sea's official biography currently lists him as President of the Football Association of Singapore.  Why would a technology entrepreneur devote significant attention to football?

For Li, football is not simply entertainment. His involvement has been associated with developing Singapore's football environment and creating better opportunities for young players.

The Lion City Sailors have invested in training infrastructure and youth development. The broader idea is that football should provide young people with more than the possibility of becoming professional athletes. Sport can teach discipline, teamwork, resilience, responsibility and how to deal with both success and failure. That makes Li's football involvement particularly interesting from a human perspective.A successful business leader could spend his time entirely inside the corporate world. Instead, Li has chosen to become involved in a field that directly affects children and young adults.

A new responsibility: Singapore football

When Li became president of the Football Association of Singapore in 2025, he entered a role with responsibilities that are very different from running a technology company.

A technology company can measure success through users, products and business performance. Football is more complicated.

A national football system involves children, parents, coaches, schools, clubs, professional players, supporters and communities. It requires patience because developing a talented young player can take many years.

Li's leadership role therefore gives him an opportunity to think about something larger than an individual company: how a country can create a stronger sporting culture. His position also connects with his interest in youth development. Instead of focusing only on famous professional players, the long-term challenge is to build pathways for young people who are just beginning.

That is one of the more meaningful dimensions of his current work.

The human side of his family life

Public information about Forrest Li's family is relatively limited, and that privacy should be respected. What is publicly reported is that he is married and lives in Singapore. His wife has been part of his personal story since the years when they were studying at Stanford and beginning their life in Singapore. Public biographical accounts have described the couple's early years in Singapore as modest compared with the life Li would later build. There is an important lesson in that part of the story.

People sometimes look at a successful entrepreneur only at the end of the journey. They see the company, the public recognition and the leadership positions. They do not see the uncertainty that existed before those things.

For Li, the early years in Singapore were not a story of immediate success. They were years of education, adaptation, risk and building a new life.

That is one reason his story can be useful to students and young entrepreneurs: success usually looks much clearer in retrospect than it feels while a person is experiencing it.

Family and the choices behind success

There is also a broader question that accompanies the story of any ambitious entrepreneur: how do you balance professional responsibility with family life?

Li has generally kept his private family life away from the public spotlight. That means it would be unfair to invent stories about his children, marriage or private relationships simply to make an article more dramatic.

What we can say is that his life illustrates a common challenge faced by people who build demanding careers. Running a major international company requires enormous amounts of time and responsibility. At the same time, family relationships are built through ordinary things — attention, presence, conversation and shared experiences.

The public side of Li's life is highly visible. His private family life is much less so.

Perhaps that contrast is itself worth remembering: a person's public achievements never tell us everything about the person they are at home.

Leadership beyond money

It is tempting to measure successful people through financial numbers.

But money is only one possible measure of achievement, and it is not necessarily the most interesting one.A more useful question about Forrest Li is: What does he do with the influence that came from building Sea?

The answer includes education, football, institutional leadership and participation in Singapore's wider development. His role at the National University of Singapore connects him with education. His Stanford advisory role connects him with business education. His football leadership connects him with youth development and sport. His work at Sea connects him with technology and entrepreneurship. SeaTaken together, these activities create a broader picture.Li is not only a businessman. He has become an institution-builder.

Why football matters

Football may seem unrelated to technology, but the two worlds have something in common: both depend heavily on young talent.

A technology company needs people who can learn, experiment and work together.

A football team needs players who can learn, train, cooperate and respond to pressure. In both cases, development takes time.

A child entering a football academy today may not become a professional for another decade. Similarly, a student learning engineering, programming or entrepreneurship may need years before their abilities become visible.

That makes investment in young people a long-term form of leadership.

It does not always produce immediate results, but it can influence an entire generation.

A different definition of success

Forrest Li's story can therefore be understood in a different way from the usual billionaire biography. It is not simply:

A man became wealthy by building a technology company.

A more meaningful version is:

A man moved countries, built a career, created a major technology organization, and then increasingly used his position to participate in education, sport and institutions that shape other people's opportunities.

That second description tells us much more about his continuing work.

What young people can learn from Forrest Li

There are several lessons in his journey.

1. Your first career does not have to define your whole life

Li trained as an engineer, studied business and entered technology entrepreneurship. His career later expanded into football and institutional leadership.

A person's education can become a foundation rather than a prison.

2. Moving into a new environment can create opportunities

Li built his major career in Singapore after coming from China.Starting somewhere new can be difficult, but it can also expose a person to new ideas, people and opportunities.

3. Success requires adaptation

Sea did not remain only a gaming company. It expanded into e-commerce and digital financial services.

The ability to recognize changing needs is one of the most important qualities in entrepreneurship.

4. Young people need opportunities, not only advice

Li's involvement in football highlights the importance ofAs of 2026, Forrest Li continues to lead Sea Limited as chairman and CEO. At the same time, his public responsibilities extend beyond the company: he is President of the Football Association of Singapore, involved with the National creating actual systems for young people to develop.

A young person does not need only someone to tell them to work hard. They also need teachers, coaches, facilities, mentors and opportunities to practice.

5. A career can eventually become a form of service

The most interesting stage of a career may not be the moment when someone becomes successful.

It may be what they decide to do with their experience afterward.

Li's involvement in education and football suggests a model in which professional success can be followed by greater involvement in society.
